Mountaineer Woodturners Newsletter

November 2009

Our president, Joe Smith, conducted the meeting.

Guests were Linda and Mary Smith (I guess they are really honorary members), and Mike Ellison and John Gregor. John has now joined our group – welcome John.

There were about 30 person present.

We were very saddened by the death of our longtime fellow member, David Mays.

Business

2010 Dues are now being accepted.

According to our treasurer, E.J. Ulland, there is $2787 in the treasury.

Charlie Brown reminded us that the Huntington Museum of Art would like to have an all wood Christmas Tree, decorated by our group. Items you make will decorate the tree over the season and you may add extra pieces to be sold in the Museum Shop. The Museum would like to have your work by Nov 20. Contact Jenine Culligan at org"Culligan@hmoa>org.

The mailing address is: Jenine Culligan, Senior Curator, Huntington Museum of Art, 2033 McCoy Road, Huntington, WV 25701. Phone is: 304-529-2701. Address questions to Charlie Brown.

Joe Smith reminded us that there will be an "ornament workshop" 11/28 – 12/4/2009 at Cedar Lakes. This is a weeklong Elderhostle (now called "Exploritas") program. Check with Joe for details.

Joe is looking for volunteers to help with a youth project at Cedar Lakes.

Our vice-president, Tom Schottle is looking for requests for meeting workshops.

Joe Smith brought several Christmas tree ornaments,
as well a round
and a square plate
and some other ornaments and candle holders. These were examples of what he will be making in the ornament workshop and perhaps in the challenge?
Dave Jones showed us 2 Sea Urchin ornaments he had made; one with a light inside.
He also had a cute miniature Walnut birdhouse.
Tom Schottle had an interesting dyed and gold-foiled dish,
and a very nice large Cherry platter.
Delbert McCartney brought in two nice large Sugar Maple bowls.

Jim Withee showed us a couple of attractive pens he had turned.
Bob Lett had an attractive large Walnut bowl.
Jim Morrison brought in a very nice large Holly bowl.
He also had a nice apple bowl
and a very attractive Maple bowl.
He also had a unique wonderful segmented hollow form.
Bob Burford brought in an attractive bowl from Cedar.
Jerry Smith brought a "nest" of four bowls from maybe Maple burl?
An unidentified fellow showed us a very nice Cherry chopping board with cutting knife.
There was a nice purple bowl on the table, but I do not believe anyone presented it.
Jamie Donaldson had a neat "winged" lidded bowl as an example of what he demonstrated in the afternoon.

John Sheets had a couple of really nice handmade tools with handles. (The tools were removed before I could photograph them).

Myke Hymes showed us a nice Christmas tree ornament, which he had colored with green aniline dye. (This was removed before I could photograph it).

This Month’s Program

In the morning, Jamie Donaldson showed us how to photograph our work frugally.

For working with your photos, Jamie recommended IrfanView a small FREEWARE (for non-commercial use) graphic viewer for Windows 9x, ME, NT, 2000, XP, 2003 , 2008, Vista, Windows 7.

After lunch he demonstrated how he turns his wonderful "winged" bowls. Both presentations were really interesting and extremely useful.
