Mountaineer Woodturners Newsletter

October 2006

Our president Joe Smith presided over the meeting.

According to the roster, there were 19 persons in attendance.

We were deeply saddened by the death of T.K. this month. He has been a real supporter of our group and a good friend. T.K. will be really missed.

Our treasurer, E.J. Ulland was back after having surgery on his left shoulder. He will be absent next month while having the other shoulder repaired.

We were pleased to see John Crede back on his new knee.

Dave Jones is presently in the hospital after having (5) by-pass surgery.

Show and Tell

Tom Schottle showed us a neat top he had turned. It was simple, but the black and white design on it was such that when the top was spinning it appeared to be red and green.
Bill McKay brought in a very nice bowl he had turned from a burl. He said the texture of the burl dictated the design.
Bill Morris showed us a small Walnut bowl turned from really punky wood. The only way he could get a smooth surface on it was to take off a significant layer with 100 mesh sand paper. Joe Smith suggested that he might have had better luck by using sanding sealer.
Bill also had a very nice covered dish from cherry with a Sycamore lid.
Joe Smith brought in a beautiful shallow bowl turned (less than 1/8th inch thick from Maple.
Marvin Faber showed us a large jumbo-jaw chuck he had made for finishing off the bottom of bowls. Really neat!
