Turning 2003
Five members of our group went over to the third woodturning symposium of the Ohio Valley Woodtuning Guild, from October 17 to 19.
As usual it was a wonderful event: 5 wonderful featured professional woodturners, 17 guest regional turners, lots of equipment and tools to see (and buy), great food and lots of socializing.
This year members of our group were involved. During the Thursday evening "Topathon" our own Dave Shombert on his fiddle contributed to the musical entertainment. On Saturday evening after the banquet Bob Fleming brought down the house and filled the coffers as auctioneer at an exciting auction.
You do not want to miss the opportunity again. Plan to attend in 2005!
Show and Tell
| Dave Jones had visited Joe Smith's shop recently and picked up some wood from which he made a couple of Birdseye Maple bowls. | |
| One was almost white. | |
| He described Joe's shop as 6' by 12' by 6 inches of sawdust. Dave also had a nice Walnut vase turned so to give an interesting pattern of sapwood and heartwood. | |
| Clarence Clarkson had a number of items to share with us. First he had a small vase, from a piece of Maple burl he had gotten from Joe Smith. | |
| Then he showed us an interesting candleholder he had turned. | |
| He had obtained some small glass jars from the now closed Pilgrim Glass, and made wooden tops for them; one top was from Cherry and deer Antler, | |
| another was from Bloodwood and Corian, | |
| and the third from Corian and Ebony. | |
| He also brought in a guide | |
| and a glue bottle he particularly likes. | |
| Tom Schottle brought in a large white Alabaster bowl. The Alabaster bowl was rimmed with segmented woods but I do not recall what. | |
| Bill McKay brought in a nice large natural edged bowl from Walnut. |
Program
| David Wentz gave a nice demonstration of spindle turning and discussed the type of work in which he is presently involved. | |
| After lunch he showed us just how useful a lathe can be by pealing Dave Mays' apple! |
November Meeting
Jim Morrison and Joe Smith will demonstrate their coring tools.
December Meeting
Tom Crabb (from Richmond) will be with us in December. He's will talk about multi-axis turning.
