Start making your plans to go to the Turning 2009 symposium put on by the Cincinnati chapter. Dave Shombert will be one of the demonstrators there.

John Sheets brought in two nice bowls he had turned from a Cherry burl.

Bill Morris showed us a nice winged box he had turned.

He also had an attractive bowl that was originally to be a winged bowl.

In addition Bill had a nice Walnut bowl.
Dave Shombert brought in a number of items to illustrate segmented turnings for his demonstration.

Tom Schottle had a "Calabash" bowl he had turned from Cherry at a workshop led by Mike Mahoney.

Warnie Lore tried to spault some wood, but some bugs got into the wood first. He turned a beautiful vase

and a weed pot out of it. The bugs really added an neat effect.

Warnie brought in a couple of his wonderful Christmas tree ornaments, such as he demonstrated making at the last meeting.

He also had a wonderful Cherry plate, which was decorated by his wife’s woodburning.

Program

Paul Weinberger started off the program. Paul told us how he had gotten into segmented turning. He started making segmented items as a pattern maker. Some advantages in doing segmented work were economy of wood and strength of the product.

He showed us a ring he uses for putting the belt on his bandsaw, which demonstrated the strength of segmented products.

As a pattern maker he had to account for shrinking of the final casted steel product, and he showed us a couple "shrinkage rules" used to compensate.

The Paul’s prize student, Dave Shombert, led us through the process he uses to construct his wonderful segmented bowls and vases.  Dave went through the steps in constructing a segmented item.

First he discussed design issues.
He showed us the tools and techniques he uses for laying out and proceeding with the project.

Steps included cutting out and sanding/shaping the individual pieces, putting the pieces together into rings, putting the layers (rings) together,
and the turning the final product.

Some of us made the most of the lunch break.
