Endgrain vase demo.

Jerry Smith demonstrated the procedure he uses to turn endgrain when creating his natural edged vases from green wood.
Jerry started with the blank between centers and turned a spigot to chuck the piece for shaping.

With the green cherry blank secured in the scroll chuck, Jerry turned the outside of the vase to roughly the shape he wanted and used a hand-held coring tool to remove the bulk of the inside waste.

The coring tool should be "long and strong" and the tool rest properly adjusted for this operation.
With the piece "roughed out," Jerry created a blizzard of shavings while refining the shape and wall thickness of his vase.

A fingernail grind bowl gouge is used for the final shaping and refining the curves. When the wall thickness and shape are "just right," Jerry sands the piece inside and out. He uses a combination of power and hand sanding.

The finished piece is ready for drying.

Lunch
After completing the demonstration project and discussing the procedures, John adjourned the meeting for lunch in the cafeteria.

Turning Learning
|
There were nice items for show and tell.
|
|
Dave Jones had four nicely turned and well-finished pieces of ornamental maple. |
Ervin Jones brought two nice pieces – one of maple burl and one of dawn redwood.

Doug Kemp had an unusual bowl that he turned from a bowling ball.

Jim Morrison displayed an apple burl bowl, a maple and walnut bowl, and three maple burl bowls.

| The June meeting will feature Byron Young demonstrating his Christmas ornaments from start to finish. Byron will divulge his “secrets” for creating the beautiful ornaments. |
|
|
|
Mike Ellison brought a diverse collection of his turnings. He had a salvaged oak bowl that was mended after a severe catch, a walnut lidded box, an hourglass, a segmented maple and walnut bowl, and an ash burl bowl. |

|
|
|
Jim Withee had a nice pen that he turned from Bethlehem olive wood. |
Ron Thompson brought two segmented bowls and a maple burl bowl.

My apology to those whose projects I missed. After Jerry’s demo, I was too slow and didn’t get them photographed before they disappeared from the display table.
Jerry Smith donated the extra "diseased" cherry blanks that he brought for the endgrain turning demonstration. They were auctioned off and the money added to the club treasury. Thanks Jerry, for the donation and the turning demonstration.
