May 2004

We had 19 members present at this meeting.

We understand that Paul Weinberger’s wife fell and broke a pelvic bone, etc. We will be thinking about Paul and wishing his wife a speedy recovery.

NEXT REGULAR MEETING

June 12, 2004

Susan Poindexter

Cedar Lakes

Business

The meeting was called to order by our president, Dave Jones.

Art and Craft Fair

This year the turning demonstration will take place in our tent, not on the Craft House porch as in the past.

Those of you who will be selling items at the Mountain State Art and Craft Fair at Cedar Lakes should contact Dave Jones so that he can assign you a number to place on the price tags for the cash register. Dave also needs to know who will bring shelves and what is their size.

We will review plans for the fair after lunch at the June 12th meeting,

Program

Dave Shombert gave a wonderful talk and demonstration on segmented woodturning. He had samples to demonstrate the various stages of planning, cutting, gluing, and turning these complex items. Seeing all that is involved in producing a segmented turning was enough to discourage most of us.

Show and Tell

Dave Jones brought in a couple of small vases turned from Yew. The smaller one has pretty purple streaks.
He had a really nice tall lidded vase from spaulted Maple with a Walnut bottom and rim.
Also from spaulted Maple was a wonderful lidded box with an African Blackwood lid.
Dave also had a nice natural edged Walnut bowl.
Jerry Smith brought a vase
and a bowl from Birdseye Maple, both of which were really attractive.
He also brought in a wonderful set of nested bowls (5 bowls) turned from a Maple Burl.
He almost lost one, but fit it with a nice bottom.
Warnie Lore brought in a beautiful hollowform vase from Mulberry with a Cherry rim.
He also had a pretty scalloped dish from Butternut.
Warnie had a nice little (~5") plate from perhaps Redwood which he had turned from a 14" blank.
Tom Schottle brought in a couple of nice little bowls
turned from pink Alabaster.
He also brought in a wooden pen and Alabaster penholder to show the effect of aging on the pen wood.
Tom had a couple of wonderful lidded boxes turned from Bamboo. (Yes, he actually used wood – an unusual wood, but wood none the less!) The Bamboo was scrap material from a baseball bat factory in Eleanor.
Bill McKay showed us an attractive little plate from Box Elder.
He also had a bleached Box Elder natural edged bowl.
Bill also brought a natural edged bowl from, I think, Oak.
Jim Smith: I brought in a couple of hollowform bowls I had turned from Buckeye
and Cherry. The Cherry bowl was the first I had hollowed using the great thickness gage designed and constructed by Joe Smith.
U K Dawson brought in a little lidded box he had turned from Poplar, I think. He also had some little bowls from Poplar, Box Elder, and Cherry.
He showed us a nice mallet from Locust.
He had a very interesting lidded box from a tree trunk.
Dave Shombert brought in three of his famous segmented bowls, which he used to illustrate his fine program. One was a Maple and Walnut hollowform bowl.
Another was a Maple and Walnut open bowl.
The third was a bowl from Paduk and Cherry.

June 12th Meeting

For the June meeting, we will have Susan Poindexter, a nutritionist from CAMC, talk to us. She comes highly recommended by Bob Fleming and Carl Mercer - she must be good! Spouses are invited. Bring your best turnings for "Show and Tell" for the spouses to admire. The wood and tool auction will be deferred to a later meeting.

After lunch, plans for the Mountain State Art and Craft Fair will be reviewed.

Miscellaneous

Wonderful West Virginia Magazine has talked to about 7 members, and has photographed 2 (Dave Jones and Joe Smith) for an article, which should be out in the next month or so.

Carl Mercer pointed out that Valley Woodworkers is looking for some power tools for their new meeting location. If you know of the availability of any inexpensive tools, please contact Carl.

* * * *

Joe Smith has been talking to a lady who has some PEG treating equipment she would like to get rid of. She also has a large number of PEG-treated turning blanks for sale. If interested, contact Joe.

You have probably noticed that we have a big pot of coffee brewing at the meetings. If you have not been taking some, start. We have been throwing a lot away.

Remember also that the URL for the Mountaineer Woodturners website is now www.mountaineerwoodturners.com, and the email address for the website is mountain@mountaineerwordtuners.com.

Some changes have been made to the website, including expanded members' Gallery. Most of the photos of members’ turnings that are being added to the Gallery are from this year’s Show and Tell sessions.

Remember, the annual picnic has been rescheduled to August 7th, due to unavailability of a shelter on our usual 2nd Saturday. Be sure and make that change on your calendars.
