June 2005
Our president, Dave Jones presided over
the meeting.
There were about 23 persons present.
Visitors were Willard "Buck" Brown, Fred Esker, and Dennie and Mona Ashby.
We understand that TK is back in the
hospital. Paul Payne is still making slow improvement.

Program
| Irene Grafer gave an interesting
demonstration |

 |
directed toward the decoration of turned
items ("surface enhancement"). She did not do any turning, but
jumped right into the subject of decorating. |
|
Some techniques demonstrated were: metal leafing, painting, pyrography, ebonizing, and torch-blackening.
|
 |
She started out with a slide show.
Handouts were available.
Here are some samples of her work.

the demonstration - a work in progress. |

Miscellaneous
Bob Fleming brought in a bunch of tools for sale at
25 cents each. The proceeds went to our treasury.
- Alan Leeland, last month’s demonstrator, donated one
of his fine mini stools, which Bob Fleming auctioned off. This brought in
$50 to our treasury.
- Carl Mercer brought in new videotape to be evaluated
for our library.
- Tom Schottle says there is some logging being done
near him, and short-cuts are available.
- Joe Smith had some Holly to give away.
- According to Bob Fleming, Alan Nesselrotte’s wife is
looking for a buyer for his Oliver lathe. For information contact her in
Dunbar at 768-1321. We don’t know anything about the condition of this
Oliver, but knowing Alan’s talent with machinery, I expect this lathe runs
just great! A real deal!
- Craft Supplies presently has a deal where you can get
a sanding disk holder with purchase of more than $75 worth of sanding disks
if you mention Mountaineer Woodturners when placing an order. They also have
a discounted price on Mahoney’s Finishes. Contact Dave Jones about this.
- Check out the Georgia Woodturning Symposium. Their
website is http://www.gawoodturner.com/symposium.php.
- Don’t forget the 19yh annual national AAW
Symposium in Kansas City on July 22 – 24, 2005.
The Newsletter will be sent by
email to those members who have given me their email address. Those who do not
have email addresses listed with me will receive the usual hardcopy newsletter
by US snailmail. Any others who wish a newsletter by mail should let me know.
This email contains links to pictures of
the "Show and Tell" items. The Newsletter with pictures is also available on the
website.
Instead of trying to add photos of all the
show and tell items to the members’ gallery, I will rely on photos sent in by
the members. So please send me pictures of your work so that I can add it to the
gallery.
