Mountaineer Woodturners
A chapter of the American Association of Woodturners
July 2011
July Meeting
In July each year, the Mountaineer Woodturners set up a booth at the Mountain State Arts and Crafts Fair to demonstrate basic turning procedures and to display the turnings produced by club members. Club volunteers who share the desire to provide the general public with insight into the wood turning hobby operate the demonstration lathes. The fair patrons have an opportunity to observe the techniques used to produce the displayed items and to peruse and purchase the members handy-work. Our presence at the Arts and Crafts Fair serves as the July club meeting.
August Meeting
In August, the club hosts the annual Mountaineer Woodturner’s picnic. This year the picnic is scheduled for the third Saturday, August 20th We will use one of one of the Cedar Lakes picnic shelters and plan to eat around noon. Load up your spouse, bragging turnings, a covered dish, and lawn chairs and join the fun. Prepare your best "church social" recipe and come early to enjoy the camaraderie. The club will provide soft drinks and ice, along with the plates, cups, napkins, and plastic utensils. The picnic serves as the club meeting for the month.
Buy, sell or trade
One of our members has a friend who is planning to purchase a drum sander. If you have or know of one for sale, contact me at willsands@casinternet.net or 304 863 6143 and we will broker the deal. The customary brokerage fee will apply. Customary, in our case, is a polite "thank you."
Remember, we will publish your woodworking related buy, sell or trade items in this newsletter. Our aim is to bring the "good stuff" and the "good people" together.

Turning Learning John Sheets provided a turning tip this month. The idea was originally published in the AAW magazine. He advises that if you need to re-mount a bowl for touch up or light turning after the spigot is turned off (no pun intended); create a jam-chuck and use a skateboad wheel with your tailstock center to secure the bowl in/on the jam-chuck. The soft sidewalls of the wheel won’t mar the bottom of your bowl.

September Meeting
The club will resume the "second Saturday" meeting schedule in Septermber. That meeting is dedicated to the annual tool and wood auction. Now is the time to inventory your "stuff" and set aside the items you no longer use or need. No doubt, someone has been searching high and low for a tool to cut left-hand threads on lidded boxes. Why not donate one or both of yours to be auctioned off? The proceeds go to the club’s treasury. And, don’t forget to bring your wallet. You may find that set of busted-bowl restoration tools that you have been coveting.

Club members and family enjoying the fair.

With the good weather, the fair was well attended and the vendors’ hard work was rewarded. Everyone seemed to enjoy the abundance of arts and crafts displayed and the diverse food choices. The Mountaineer Woodturners contributed their share in the form of demonstrations and turned items for sale.
