A chapter of the American Association of Woodturners

February 2011

February business

President John Sheets called the February, 2011 meeting of the Mountaineer Woodturners to order at 10:00 with fourteen members and one visitor present. John welcomed the members and visitor, Calvin Leport of Henderson, WV to the meeting. He then asked the officers in turn if they had announcements or reports pertaining to the club.

V.P. Byron Young reminded the members present that the Totally Turning symposium will be held this year on March 26th & 27th in Saratoga Springs, NY. More information is available at:

Treasurer John Gregor reported that the club has a balance of $2877.57 in the club treasury. He also reported that he has nearly completed updating the club's non-profit business paper work.

Secretary Bill Sands requested that the members review their personal information in the club records to insure that it is correct and up-to-date.

With nothing to add, the Librarian, Jim Morrison, was uncharacteristically quiet.

Having concluded the officers' reports, John opened the floor for the discussion of club business.

EJ Ulland informed the club members that the widow of his deceased friend, Jerry Milhone, is selling Jerry's woodworking tools and supplies. The inventory includes a bandsaw, lathe, and other typical shop equipment. If you are interested in purchasing any of these items, contact me at wgs@wvonline.com, and I will put you in contact with EJ for the details.

Byron announced that the agenda for the March club meeting is a lidded box workshop. Be prepared to participate in the March meeting event and bring a suitable piece of wood to create a box and hone your endgrain turning skills.

John Gregor proposed that a collection of Turning DVDs should be started and these DVDs loaned to members at a fee of $2 per month. The initial DVD collection will be composed of contributions from members. The DVDs may be donated to the club or loaned to the club with the member retaining ownership of the DVD. The revenue generated from the rental fee will be applied to the purchase of new DVDs. The club approved the proposal. John will administer the accounting function and librarian, Jim Morrison, will track the DVDs that are loaned out. If you have related DVDs that you are willing to donate or loan, bring them to the next meeting for processing.

Chapter Challenge

Stan Cook organized the pen turning chapter challenge which was completed this month. He divided the challenge into two categories, novice and professional, with special criteria for each category. Stan developed the rules for the challenge and outlined the judging criteria. He provided the necessary forms, as well as a demonstration of finishing techniques at the January club meeting.

There were six entries in the professional and three in the armature category. Congratulations to:

The first place winners will receive a gift card for $30 of laser engraving. The second and third place winners will receive a card for $20 and $10 respectively, of laser engraving.

The club owes Stan a large THANK YOU for his effort in organizing and administering the pen turning chapter challenge. Stan also donated the laser engraving service for the winners.

Show and Tell

Two nice catalpa bowls turned by Gary Gibbs.

A small, well finished, lidded box by Byron Young

Dave Jones displayed a chestnut, walnut, and two box elder bowls.

Two very nice segmented, lidded boxes and a sugar maple bowl by Delbert McCartney

John Crede turned and textured this presentation plaque for a retiring Guardsman.

Ron Thompson had a nice lidded box and a segmented bowl with black inlay. I missed the bowl.

Jim Morrison brought two nice holly bowls with segmented feature rings.

Tom Schottle demonstrated the technique he uses to create inside-out turnings with other than four segments. His system works with any number of "sides," however, the angles must be precisely milled to form a tight circle when the pieces are fitted together. He also uses band clamps to hold the segments together for the first turning rather that the more traditional glue with brown paper method.

Meeting Adjourned

With no further business to conduct, John adjourned the meeting at 14:00.

Words of Wisdom

As our skills improve and we progress in our abilities, we invariable find that we are in competition with our fellow turners, both formally and informally. President Millard Fillmore had some sage advice which pertains to our situation.

"An honorable defeat is better than a dishonorable victory."

The next meeting of the Mountaineer Woodturners will be held on March 12th at Cedar Lakes.

Keep turnin' and learnin'.
