Mountaineer Woodturners Newsletter

February 2008

Many thanks to Tom Schottle and E.J. Ulland for taking notes and photographs in my absence. I hope I have correctly transferred the information, and have not mixed up the photos.

Chapter Challenge 2008

The challenge was a huge success. We had 10 entries, and all were very good (i.e., their measurements were very close to the plan). The judge was one tough mean SOB (John Crede) who measured down to the 1/1000 of an inch.

With that kind of scrutiny one entry was clearly superior; Byron Young – now a two time winner.

Program

Herb Derr demonstrated how to work steel, soften and harden and temper, to make tools

Show and Tell

Tom Schottle had a small bowl with a spray on a stone finish.

Byron Young showed a large flat Cherry platter, a green stained Cypress hollow form, and a green stained Soft Maple bottle with stopper.

Bill Morris brought in 3 small ring holders. (Did he use a skew?)

Dave Jones brought in two off center bowls and two deep bowls from Tree of Heaven.

Warnie Lore brought in a rose made from wood shavings from a Forstner bit. He also had a spaulted Beech weed pot with a plastic insert and a deep cup from a variety of laminated woods.

Ervin Jones brought in two pecan natural-edge bowls.

Jim Morrison had a deep, red-stained Baltic Birch plywood goblet and two segmented bowls of Fiddleback Maple.

Ned Whiteaker brought in a demi-moon table of Sassafras and Japanese Ash.
