Mountaineer Woodturners
A chapter of the American Association of Woodturners
Business
Club President, John Sheets, called the November meeting of the Mountaineer Woodturners to order. There were seventeen members present.
John informed the members that the AAW has donated $100 to the Mountaineer Turners in the form of a grant. The grant money is designated to finance the construction of a spectator shield. The shield will be used for public turning demonstrations or anytime there is a need to protect observers from flying debris when operating a lathe. The members of the Codger Lodge, a small group of woodworkers who meet each Tuesday, have the facilities to procure the materials and construct the shield. Many of the Codgers are members of the Mountaineer Turners and they have agreed to design and build a suitable spectator shield for our club. John asked all, who are not currently members of AAW, to consider joining. The American Association of Woodturners provides many benefits to affiliated clubs and individuals who join.
John Gregor provided a treasurer’s report. The club has a balance of $4339.09 after paying all of the current bills.
Byron Young turned a handle for a hand drill and donated the tool to the club. Colonel John (John Gregor) auctioned the piece and Rich Northrop won the auction. The $15 was added to the club treasury.
The issue of backlighting at the front of the meeting room was discussed. The windows admit too much light, making it difficult to see anyactivates occurring there. After the discussion, the members voted to buy and install blinds for the windows at the front of the room.
The 2012 Challenge
“What do you make of this?”
Byron explained this year’s challenge and provided suitable billets. The rules are simple:
1. Turning obviously has to occur.
2. You will be given a piece of wood, similar to others accepting the challenge, which you may cut, dry, glue, stain, dye, paint, sand, polish, finish, or anything else you can think of.
3. You may not add additional wood. You must use only the wood given to you.
Judging will be held on Saturday, February 11th.

More billets will be available at the January meeting for those who haven’t received one.
January Meeting Agenda
The January meeting of the Mountaineer Woodturners will be held on Saturday, January 14th, at Cedar Lakes. Byron will again discuss the project and the guidelines for the club’s 2012 challenge.

Remember that the club library has books and reference material available to borrow, and a growing selection of DVDs to rent. Information and instruction are keys to becoming an accomplished turner. The library materials contain both, along with many design ideas. Take advantage of this resource at the next meeting. |

Some have requested a club roster in order to contact other members. I am including, as an attachment, the club’s roster. Remember to pay your club dues for 2012. The dues are $30 this year. You can pay at the monthly meeting or mail a check to the treasurer: John Gregor 1922 Winding Hills Charleston, WV 25320 |
