Picnic

We had another great picnic. About 20 persons were present. There was wonderful food and conversation. The weather was just right: it was not too hot with a nice breeze. We want to thank Joe and Mary Smith for all the work they put into making this picnic a success!

NEXT REGULAR MEETING

September 9, 2006

Our Annual Wood and Tool Auction

Cedar Lakes

Business

Business was postponed until the September meeting.

Show and Tell

I was relaxing and enjoying the great food and conversation, so I neglected to take notes. I will have to try recall from memory (which is not much good anymore).

Dave Jones brought three of his wonderful lidded boxes
Tom Schottle showed us some of his famous platters and a nice bowl, which I think was from Silver Maple.

Jim Morrison brought some of his fabulous segmented platters.

Joe Smith brought several beautiful bowls from, I think, spaulted Maple or Cherry. You can see how out of it I was.

Jerry Smith showed us a couple really nice lidded, stemmed boxes,

and a beautiful chalice turned from Cherry.
Bob Lett showed us a couple of very nice bowls. One was from Cedar. Beautiful! And the other - - although it was a really fine bowl, not only do I not remember the wood, but the photo did not turn out. Sorry.
Warnie Lore brought in a bowl we had seen before, previously in a stand made from a nest of woven grapevine. Now he had cleverly attached legs.
He showed us the device he made to bend the legs. Neat!

September Meeting

Cedar Lakes on September 9th

The program for Sept meeting is our annual auction in the morning, and in the afternoon we'll talk about finishing.

For those new to the club, the auction consists of donated items (tools, wood, etc) from club members, so get out to your shop and clean out those unused tools we all have laying around. Remember, one turner’s junk is another turner’s treasure!! (Or something like that.)

For the afternoon, be prepared to either demonstrate or talk about your favorite finishing method. I'd like to see someone demonstrate or talk about finishing with CA glue so if anyone has done that, please inform the rest of us.

October

In October we (the woodturners) have been invited by Valley Woodworkers to attend their Fall Wood Demonstration. It's scheduled to be held 7 Oct at one of their member’s farm. (Tom Schottle will have the exact directions at the Sept meeting, but basically it's on route 60 near Hurricane.) He (the member, no Tom) will demonstrate sawing logs on a band saw mill. They intend to have logs either as raffle prizes or they will be auctioned off and the winner/buyer can have them custom cut. They'll even do bowl blanks but not on the band saw mill. Right now it is believed they have sycamore, oak, walnut and butternut logs donated. Sounds interesting!

Miscellaneous

The Newsletter will be sent by email to those members who have given me their email address. Those who do not have email addresses listed with me will receive the usual hardcopy newsletter by US snailmail. Any others who wish a newsletter by mail should let me know.

This email contains links to pictures of the "Show and Tell" items. The Newsletter with pictures is also available on the website.

Instead of trying to add photos of all the show and tell items to the members’ gallery, I will rely on photos sent in by the members. So please send me pictures of your work so that I can add it to the gallery.
